Legendary John Around's Tale

Portrait of a Turkana man rocking his akiporo, a handmade hat, with an Ostrich feather. These hats are mostly made in Uganda. This combination is widely worn by Kraal leaders and young men. Different ornaments are used in this community to separate different ages: Children, young adults, adults and elderly, ceremonies, season and gender

I am Talking about a great personality JOHN AROUND Today. The Person in the Above Not Him is not him please. So some years back, there was this great talented man called John Around. He was in his late 20s if not 30s. He had almost the same height and almost the same smile with the one above. He was widely known because he spoke almost every language that was spoken in kakuma.

Most of our friends from the Turkana Community spoke Dinka but what made John Around standout was his ability to remix and refix dinka songs, same as what @ericomondi and @padiwubonn currently do. He was our main source of entertainment across the whole Kakuma, from Hong Kong to Kakuma Town.

Few years later he vanished and was nowhere to be traced.

He became a role model to most of us from the camp because of his determination and greatness in what he was best at. Right now we have guys who were nicknamed John Around.

This art of song remixing is still practiced in the camp upto date.

He was one great talent that was not documented but will always be appreciated. John is a proof that Kakuma is full of a lot of undocumented talents from football, music, fashion, basketball and so much more.

Thanks John, you sparkled our childhood and that of our parents too.
